GENERALS CONSTRUCTION CAREER EXPLORATION PROGRAM
2008-2011 Program Overview and Reports

Goal:  To expose Club Members, ages 13-18, throughout Broward County to careers within the Construction Industry.

Methods used to achieve Goal: 

  • Hands-on classes with highly qualified instructors
  • Guest Speakers Bureau
  • Field trips and site visits to industry related businesses and programs
  • Annual Career Day
  • Program Orientations
  • Form industry alliances to provide apprenticeship opportunities

Overview of Activities for 2008-2009 Program Year

  • 48 Youth completed 16 hours of "hands-on" Carpentry classes (Instructed by Mark Clifford, BGCBC Instructor)
  • 250 Youth attended a 1 day seminar with guest speaker from Faith Construction
  • 150 Youth took part in the 1st Annual Generals Construction Career Day (Employees of 12 Companies also attended)
  • 24 Youth completed 6 hours of "hands-on" classes in "Build-Up!:  A Tool Kit for Learning Program" (Instructed by Roepnack Corp. Employee)
  • 10 Youth completed 1 full day of "hands-on" class at the Lowe's Kids Skills Clinic (Instructed by Lowe's Employee)
  • 10 Youth complete 1 full day of "hands-on" class at the Home Depot Kids Skills Clinic (Instructed by Home Depot Employee)
  • 12 Youth attended 1 full day site visit at the BCC Central Garage Project with Beaufort Construction
  • 8 Youth completed 40 classes while producing a short documentary – "How Nature Affects Society" that was entered in a Boys & Girls Clubs of America National Competition (Instructed by Paloma Herrera and Employee of City of Pompano)
  • 40 Youth attended a 1 day seminar with guest speaker from DK Architect, Inc.
  • 12 Youth attended 1 full day site visit to The Foundations in Plantation with Stiles Construction
  • 10 Youth attended 1 full day site visit to Boca Elementary School with Construction Company Employees
  • 10 Youth took part in a 1 day tour of General Crane, USA
  • 150 Youth took part in the 2nd Annual Generals Construction Career Day (Employees of 12 Companies also attended)
  • 275 Youth took part in the Program Orientation:  "Back to School Bash"

  • 33 Youth completed 1 full day "hands-on" classes with AA Advance Air AC Training (Instructed by AA Advance Air Employee using ACE Program Curriculum)
  • 39 Youth participated in a 1 full day Special Event with Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) Bicycle Give-Away
  • 150 Youth took part in the 3rd Annual Generals Construction Career Day (Employees of 14 Companies also attended)

Description of the ABC Craft Trainees Program
Created by Associated Builders and Contractor, Inc. The program consists of 144 hours of class and lab time to provide a total of 25 16 – 18 year old students a Certification of completion of 1 year of coursework of a 4 year program from the National Center for Construction Education and Research Registry. The lessons include construction math, plan reading, construction safety procedures, the Osha 10 Hour Certification and they will also be exposed to Mechanical, Electrical and Carpentry Trades so they can decide which track they may want to continue their training in upon graduation of high school.

Description of the "Build Up!" A toolkit for Learning Program
Created by Associated General Contractors of America, consists of 8 lessons and contains enough supplementary material for a total of 20 instructional hours.  Although it was originally designed for Grades 5 -8, the instructors from Roepnack Corporation have adapted it to be used with our 7 – 9 year old class and our 10 – 12 year old class.

Upon completion of the "Build Up!" Program, participants will be able to:

  • Compare and categorize buildings according to different characteristics
  • Describe some of the systems used to make a building livable
  • Describe how water travels in pipes through a building
  • Determine which geometric shapes can support the most weight
  • Describe the different types of bridges and design their own bridge to span a river or a road
  • Plan and create a structurally sound skyscraper building using specific materials
  • Discuss environmental concern about construction
  • Discuss the different hazards associated with construction sites
  • Discuss the various career opportunities within the construction industry

Description of the Woodworking Program
A session consists of 8 classes that meet 2 hours per day, twice a week, for four weeks for a total of 16 instructional hours.  Members may sign up for as many sessions as they would like each year and have the opportunity to progress from the Beginners classes to the Intermediate and Advanced classes.  Progression from one skill level to another is based on the instructor's assessment of each individual participant's ability to gain and demonstrate the designed skills.  The instructor has created and utilizes a comprehensive curriculum for these classes, as follows:

Upon completion of the Beginners session, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate basic shop safety procedures
  • Indentify the parts of and correctly use the miter saw, pad finish sander and electric drill
  • Indentify and properly use various fasteners and hand tools
  • Demonstrate an understanding of measurement techniques using angels and tape measures
  • Complete construction of a "keep sake box" or 20" x 10" bookshelf

Upon completion of the Intermediate session, participants will be able to:

  • Properly use shop and carpentry terminology
  • Identify the parts of and correctly use the 7 ¼ circular saw and router
  • Effectively use wood stains to decorate projects
  • Complete the construction of a "name plaque" utilizing the above competencies

Upon completion of the Advanced session, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate advanced shop safety procedures
  • Mentor the beginning and intermediate students on projects
  • Identify the parts of and correctly use the 3" x 21" belt sander and saber (jig) saw
  • Complete the construction of a "treasure chest" utilizing the above competencies
