BGCBC Wins Best Overall Program!
Each year, chief volunteer officers, board members and chief professional officers from Boys & Girls Clubs throughout Florida gather to attend the two-day Boys & Girls Clubs of America and The Florida Area Council meetings. This forum serves as a way to share ideas and updates on issues that impact Boys & Girls Clubs in the state of Florida. The event also provides an opportunity to recognize outstanding Club programs and board volunteers within the state.
This year, Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County was awarded as having the Best Overall Program in the State of Florida for our Saturday Program.
For the past 6 years, The Jim Moran Foundation has provided the support for all program costs for Saturdays, investing in the Clubs because of their belief in the benefit of Clubs being open on Saturdays. Encouraging healthy lifestyles and academic success, the BGCBC Saturday Program compliments our youth development programming that serves children afterschool Monday - Friday during the school year. In addition to a free, healthy snack and hot meal, members attending a Club on a Saturday have the opportunity to participate in sports leagues, a math and reading learning lab and select programs from our Workforce Development Initiative. The 35-week program runs from September through June during the school year and serves members ages 6 – 18 at our 11 Clubs during the hours of 11:00AM -- 3:00PM. Purposed with extending learning opportunities and developing healthy minds and bodies, the program includes the following components:
Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County is one of the few Boys & Girls Clubs in the nation, and is the only Club in Florida, to open its doors to members on Saturdays to run core programs for youth. The uniqueness of the BGCBC Saturday Program is evidenced by the positive effects it will have on its beneficiaries. Over the past 6 years, there have been a total of 96,186 member visits, where members spent a combined 283,768 hours in the Clubs! Both parents and members benefit from the Clubs being open on Saturdays. Parents are able to work on Saturday without paying costly fees or leaving their children home alone. Those who are experiencing financial difficulties can now rest assured that their children are being fed a nutritious meal without any additional cost to them. Since the start of the Saturday program in 2012, BGCBC has served 132,587 healthy snacks and hot meals to Club members on Saturdays! Member attendance, meals served and hours spent in the Clubs is tracked using KidTrax, our data management system.
In addition to providing members with a safe place to go when their parents are not at home, the Saturday program also increases their physical activity level and provides them with healthy meals containing nutrients. Because of this, over the long-term, the Saturday Program may have an effect on obesity rates amongst members. The educational component to the Saturday program enables members to increase their reading and math competency levels and provides students with supplemental homework assistance. With the addition of offering specialized teen programs such as Customer Service and Money Matters, the Saturday Program will also be important to our Workforce Development Program, allowing teens to make up sessions they may have missed during the week or expedite program completion and obtain employment.
Thank you to the Jim Moran Foundation for its continued support of our programs and youth!
