Nan Knox Club Member Inspires Community Fundraiser
Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County Advisory Council member and longtime volunteer, Julie Saumsiegle, recently wrote in her blog about an inspirational Club member, Kayla, Nan Knox's 2015-2016 Youth of the Year, Keystone Club President and winner of a National Keystone Award. Julie met Kayla at the Nan Knox Boys & Girls Club/Linda & Douglas Von Allmen Campus, where she was visiting the Club’s aviation program, Ionosphere, for a presentation from original Tuskegee Airman Lieutenant Colonel Leo Gray.
While talking with Kayla about her future aspirations, Julie learned that she had a dream to provide the BGCBC cheerleading team with new uniforms to compete in Nationals. This conversation was all Julie needed to begin a course of action that would involve countless individuals in the community in an effort to give back to the boys and girls of the Nan Knox Club.
The idea of a Spaghetti Dinner to raise funds for the uniforms was formed and Julie quickly began to bring the pieces together with the help of other passionate members of the community, including Kayla. Speeches were prepared and donations were made, culminating in a successful event, raising the funds to provide brand new uniforms for the team! The event was such an inspiration to those in attendance that Dr. Patrick Arnold, an orthodontist, offered his services to Kayla on the spot! BGCBC thanks Julie Saumsiegle and the community members who gave generously of their time and resources for this wonderful event.
