Pop-up Career Shop at Dr. Harold Reitman Club

The space in the classroom was renovated to look like a barber shop and salon. Ternika Williams-Sharpe, a local salon owner and Farouk Ghani, a local barber shop owner and former Marti Huizenga Club member, led weekly sessions for six (6) weeks from mid-February to March to teach Club members about styling and cutting techniques, as well as starting and maintaining a business.

The finale event for the Pop-up Career Shop was a Hair Show/Hair Battle at the Club. The theme was a “Time in Paradise.” The teens styled and decorated their mannequin heads and walked the runway showing off their stresses.  Club members and staff cheered on their peers and celebrated their skills. There was also a special visit by Dr. Harold Reitman!

The Pop-up Shop at the Dr. Harold Reitman Club was so successful that the program will be held at the Thomas D. Stephanis Club (New Era Barber Shop), Leo Goodwin Teen Center (Retail Shop - GAP), Lauderhill Club (Barber Shop), Nan Knox Club (Technology Business – Hotwire Communications) and Lester H. White (T-Shirt Shop – McKee’s Tees) during the summer, fall and spring. These Pop-up Shops are generously funded by the SunTrust Foundation.

BGCBC would like to thank the SunTrust Foundation and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America for funding and supporting this initiative. BGCBC also thanks Ternika, Farouk and Hair Show volunteer, Kywanna Bosket for all of their hard work making the program a success!
