Volunteers Give Back To Nan Knox Club

The Nan Knox Boys & Girls Club paid homage to its namesake this month with an expanded pollinator landscape garden, new stone birdbath and 300+ bags of mulch laid down by volunteers from the Club’s advisory council, Broward Master Gardeners, Fort Lauderdale Garden Club and the Fort Lauderdale Orchard Supply Hardware store.

Jesse Durko, long-time friend of the late botanist/author Nan Knox, generously donated all the plants used for the property, and Orchard Supply sponsored the bird bath, mulch and three volunteers from the Fort Lauderdale store, including assistant store manager, Eric Lundeen, to deliver the goods and help do the work. “This is what it’s all about – helping the kids learn more about their environment and working to build things together – we’re committed to our community” said Durko of the project that will benefit the hundreds of youth who attend the Club each day.

In 2016 the Nan Knox garden became a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation, and with the new educational food garden, sponsored by the Fort Lauderdale Garden Club, volunteer Club members and Master Gardeners give classes to the kids on growing food, nurturing plants, understanding the important of pollinators and more.
