BGCBC Members Experience a Day in the life of a College Student Thanks to Broward College

The 2018 Career Launch – A Day at Broward College, hosted by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County and Broward College, exposed over 260 teen Club Members to the educational opportunities at Broward College – South Campus.  During the event, teen Club Members were greeted by Dr. Rolando Garcia, the President of Broward College – South Campus. Dr. Garcia told his story about being a first-generation college student and the importance of achieving your educational goals no matter the circumstances. Matt Organ, the Executive Vice President of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County addressed the Club Member to encourage them to take advantage of the activities and workshops during the day so that they can have more knowledge about their educational opportunities after high school. 

The Club Members were then dismissed to attend their breakout sessions. Breakout sessions are interactive workshops that focus on different majors offered at Broward College – South Campus. Breakout sessions included: (1.) Aviation workshop, where the Club Members enjoyed a flight simulation and learned about how to become a pilot (2.) the automotive workshop where the Club Members learned about how to become a mechanic including the educational requirements; (3.) performing arts session, where the Club Members learned about the art and drama programs at Broward College and the different career opportunities; (4.) the Sciences/STEAM presentation where the Club Members learned about the career paths for science and math majors; (5.) the Campus Tour where the Club Members were able to see everything that the South Campus has to offer including student life, the cafeteria and library; (6.) the career assessment workshop where the Club Members were able to learn more about the career paths that are best for them. 

The Club Members then enjoyed general presentations about the athletics program at Broward College as well as the registration and admissions process. Broward College staff led a fun “Quiz Bowl” competition to test what the Club Members learned throughout the day. There was even special appearance by Sammy the Seahawk!

BGCBC is proud that Broward College has been an exceptional partner yet again thus demonstrating their investment in our young people as they strive to achieve their academic and career goals!
